Welcome to Raymond CURF's class

Born in the Netherlands, Raymond Curfs studied percussion and timpani in Maastricht, Cologne and Berlin with teachers including Werner Otten, Pieter Jansen, Georg Breier and Rainer Seegers.

After engagements as timpanist in the Noord Nederlands Orkest in Groningen, Stadttheater Bielefeld/Germany and the Rundfunk Sinfonie Orchester Berlin he became, in 1999, principal timpanist at the Bavarian State Opera and Bavarian State Orchestra in Munich under music directors Zubin Mehta and [since 2006] Kent Nagano.

Since September 2007, Raymond Curfs is principal timpanist of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks in Munich with Mariss Jansons as musical director.

Raymond Curfs is a regular guest with leading orchestras including Berliner Philharmoniker, Chamber Orchestra of Europe and La Scala Milan under the baton of conductors including Claudio Abbado, Semyon Bychkov, Valerie Gergiev, Bernard Haitink, Nicolaus Harnoncourt, Lorin Maazel, Riccardo Muti, Andris Nelsons and Wolfgang Sawallisch.

After hearing Raymond Curfs play, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra offered the artist the job as timpanist in their orchestra, where he has been a member from 2000 until 2006 with Daniel Harding as musical director. Claudio Abbado was charmed of his playing and asked him to become his timpanist in the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, with which he plays every summer since the revival of this orchestra in 2003.

Raymond Curfs teaches at the ‘Hochschule für Musik’ in Munich and is often giving master classes worldwide, especially on operas by Strauss and Wagner. From 2008 until 2009, he was guest-professor at the Conservatoire National Superieur De Musique de Paris. Since September 2011, Raymond Curfs teaches at the Conservatorium in Maastricht.

Besides being a solist, Raymond Curfs is a dedicated chamber musician, playing together with Kolja Blacher, Lorenza Borrani, Reinhold Friedrich, Natalia Gutman, Katja and Marielle Labeque, Jens-Peter Maintz, Alois Posch, Peter Sadlo, among others.

Additionally, he is a frequently asked jury member at auditions and contests.

The Timpani Master Class is one of the master classes within the World Percussion Movement "Summer Academy" 2014, which combines individual and group lectures. The programme of the master class can be partly chosen by participants, soloist repertoire and also music for ensembles or orchestral excerpts, which are part of each audition. There is a huge emphasis on the technique, sound and interpretation. Participants and professor discuss various traditions and styles of playing timpani, acoustics, as well as the importance of tempering and tuning.
